Drought still severe and widespread in SA: AgriSA

Agriculture organisations are concerned about the impact on commodity prices and how farmers and consumers will be affected.

According to a survey conducted by Agri-SA in December last year, R7 billion and 31 000 jobs have been lost since January 2018 due to the persistent drought and severe heat conditions in the country.

The farming community has scheduled emergency meetings to discuss the impact of drought and job losses in the agricultural sector.

AgriSA’s Deputy Executive Director, Christo van der Rheede says, “Our own research indicates that the large part of our country faces a severe drought. What we have discovered is that farmers used to plan for every six years for a drought and but nowadays it seems every second year we are face with this kind of calamity…”
