A multi-award winning Xitsonga traditional music artist, Dr Thomas Chauke and Shinyori Sisters, has expressed disappointment in his treatment during the annual Mapungubwe arts festival in Polokwane, Limpopo. Dr Chauke’s performance was stopped allegedly by the stage managers who told him that they were acting on instruction.

It’s alleged that MEC Thandi Moroka instructed that Dr Chauke’s performance be stopped as they wanted to use the fireworks and play a cross-over song on Saturday night.

The department has conceded that Dr Chauke’s performance was stopped and that it has apologised to him. The stage management company, Daily Double, wasn’t available for comment.

Dr Chauke says this not the first time this happened at the Mapungubwe festival.

“Some revelers have noticed that my performance was stopped unlike in the past where they did not notice. I am disappointed because it’s done by leaders. The MEC blamed the stage managers, but the stage managers say they were acting on instruction from the leaders.”
