Dr Selebano apologises to families of Life Esidimeni victims

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Suspended Head of the Department of Health in Gauteng Dr Barney Selebano says he intends visiting the families of the Life Esidimeni victims individually to ask for forgiveness.

Selebano apologised to the family at the end of his testimony at the Life Esidimeni hearings in Parktown, north of Johannesburg on Friday.

He had been subpoenaed to come and account for the deaths of 143 mentally-ill patients who were transferred to ill-equipped NGOs.

Selebano says he is prepared to do whatever it takes to show how remorseful he really is.

“And I know what might probably happen; they’ll say, ‘don’t come into our house. Get out! You messed us up. You come here? Out!’ And I’ve resolved in my heart, Justice, that if they do that, I’ll come back again, I’ll come back again. And they’ll say come in. I’ll come in and they’ll say don’t ever come into our house. And I’ll come back again, and they’ll say what is your story and I’ll say, ‘I want you to forgive me at a personal level. Forget the department and if I have to walk the streets and the miles around Gauteng, I want to do that.’”
