Several names on the African National Congress (ANC) national list are raising eyebrows.

They include that of ANC Women’s League president Bathabile Dlamini who has defended her inclusion as a reflection of the will of the people.

Dlamini is in the top 20 of the ANC’s national list.

She spoke exclusively to SABC News on the sidelines of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Arguing that her inclusion was determined more by the grassroots and less by the stinging Constitutional Court judgment over her handling of the SASSA debacle last year she says: “What is in the list of the ANC is the will of the people. In the ANC, we do not apply to be public representatives, we are elected by the people and therefore what is there is the will of the people.”

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule has also defended the party’s list.

“Let us look at what the law says. You are talking about people who have never been charged for any crime or offence. Why do you want to single out people because they are out there in the media with allegations. Why don’t you respect the universal principles which are applicable throughout the world.”
