Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thomson, has handed over school uniforms to 240 learners from disadvantaged families at Edendale in Pietermaritzburg.

Needy learners from 12 schools were identified by their teachers.

Thompson is hosting a national imbizo and handover of school uniforms to indigent learners as part of Youth Month celebration.

Thomson says through the programme they want to ensure that all children have uniforms when they go to school.

“It will help them because if you had notice some of them have torn uniforms, torn jerseys, shoes. So it will help them also to boost their confidence, they should not feel different from other kids. They should feel as part of the whole team at school. We are trying to bridge that gap of inequality.”

Meanwhile, learners say they are happy that they will now have new uniforms like other children.

“I am happy that now I have new uniform,” said one happy student.
