Retired Deputy Chief Justice and Life Esidimeni Arbitrator, Dikgang Moseneke, will release his final report on the deaths of 144 psychiatric patients on Monday.

This follows months of public hearings into the deaths, after patients were unlawfully transferred to ill-equipped NGOs from Life Esidimeni facilities.

Dozens of witnesses including family members, government officials, NGO owners and various experts testified at the hearings between October 2017 and February.

The arbitration sought to help the affected families find closure and redress.

Family members of the victims and the survivors are eagerly waiting to find out how much they’ll receive in financial compensation.

Government has already reached an agreement with the families of the deceased to pay them R200 000 per family for funeral expenses and financial shock.

However, Moseneke has emphasized that the figure is not final, and he’ll make the final determination.

Families of those who died are also claiming R1.5 million in Constitutional damages, while the families of the survivors are claiming just over R2 million in general damages.
