Death of community member prompts Eshowe protests

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Eshowe police and emergency services in northern KwaZulu-Natal have had their hands full trying to contain community members who allegedly torched huge tracts of land, including sugar cane plantations belonging to a local farmer.

The community allege that a security guard attached to the farm shot dead a 23-year-old community member.

Umlalazi ward 9 councillor Mbongiseni Dludla says the victim and another man had been fishing illegally in the farm’s dam.

Two security guards patrolling the area fired shots in the direction of the two men. That is when one died.

The other man escaped unharmed.

Traffic on the R66 between Nkwalini and eShowe has been severely affected.
