Deadline for Guptas to appear before Indian tax officials

Authorities in India are still hopeful the Gupta brothers will appear before tax officials.

The family had been given seven days from last Thursday, to comply with the order.

This was the fourth time in about three weeks that the Indian tax authorities had extended a deadline for the Gupta brothers to answer questions about their tax affairs.

The Guptas are being investigated for suspected money-laundering charges and fraudulently amassing properties in India.

They were expected to appear before Indian tax officials on Monday in connection with a probe against them in their home country.

The brothers have been summoned by Indian tax officials after their properties in India were raided last month and several documents with transactions worth millions of dollars were seized.

They have already missed two tax summons, sending their chartered accountant in their place on both occasions.

Last week, Income Tax department sources told the SABC that the Guptas asked for one week’s extension.
