The Democratic Alliance (DA) has rescinded Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille’s membership.

The party’s Federal Executive Committee has announced the decision at a media briefing in Cape Town. Her position as mayor has not been clarified yet, but the party says it expects Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson to become acting mayor.

Over 70% of the DA’s caucus in the City of Cape Town council recently passed a motion of no confidence in De Lille. Last week, she indicated that she would go to court if the Federal Executive did not rule in her favour.

DA Chairperson James Selfe, says De Lille’s membership ceased on April 26 when she publicly stated on a radio station that she would resign at the end of her legal battle with the DA.

“The  Federal Legal Commission of the party found that context showed very clearly that she intended to resign from the DA. Accordingly the Federal Executive resolved last night to endorse the findings of the FLC that her membership had in fact ceased. We have informed Miss De Lille and the city manager of this fact,” says Selfe.
