De Lille warns residents to adhere to water restrictions

Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille says those residents who do not adhere to the new water restrictions will face heavy penalties and will have a water saving meter installed at their property.

Tuesday saw the first day of level-6 water restrictions being implemented as the City tries to avoid the taps running dry.

The latest restrictions require urban users to reduce their water usage by 45% and agricultural users by 60%. However, De Lille says that households that need to use more water due to medical reasons or circumstances where more than one family live on a property, can apply for an exemption from the City.

“If you do not adhere to the 350 litres per day which translates into 87 litres per person per day then you know you could face the city having to put in a water meter device. We are looking at close to about 200 000 households that are using more than the 10500 litres per day. But we also have an exemption that residents who have valid reasons for monthly consumption higher than the 10 000 litres they can apply to the city to get a quota increase.” Click below for more on the story:
