De Lille ready to put aside differences with DA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Embattled Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille says she hopes she and the Democratic Alliance (DA) can now find a solution to their on-going political battle with each other. De Lille will now remain in office for at least the next two weeks.

De Lille says she is ready to put her differences with the DA aside to focus on the interests of the citizens of Cape Town first.

“I really think now it’s up to the leadership of the DA to make a decision whether we continue to fight like we are doing now, or we put the people of the City of Cape Town first and we agree to work together to fight for the people of the City of Cape Town, if as leaders, we cannot display fairness and equality amongst ourselves, we certainly cannot build a democracy where we want to build fairness and equality.”

De Lille remains Mayor of Cape Town until the High Court makes a final ruling on her urgent application to challenge the DA’s decision to terminate her membership from the party and subsequently her removal as Mayor.

Judge Patrick Gamble ruled that the cessation of her membership of the DA has been suspended until her urgent interdict against the party’s decision is heard on 25 May.

The DA last week terminated her membership from the party because she publicly declared her intention to resign from the party on a radio station.

Meanwhile the DA says it is pinning its hopes on next week’s court judgement. DA Western Cape leader Bonginkosi Madikizela was speaking outside the court.

“This was a more practical judgement rather than a legal one. It’s going to be a difficult issue to deal with given the fact that the person that you’re talking about left long ago. Her comments, her posture, her everything else clearly indicates that but we need to put the interests of the people of Cape Town first and we need to make sure that we rise above party politics work together until that court judgement.”
