Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille’s urgent court application for a secret ballot is expected to be heard on either on Monday or Tuesday next week.

De Lille, who filed the application on Thursday, faces a motion of no confidence in the city Council on Thursday next week relating to alleged corruption. She says she wants to ensure that members of the Democratic Alliance vote according to their conscience.

De Lille says the DA is tarnishing her reputation by not giving her an opportunity to defend herself against the charges.

“What we’ve seen happening over the past six months, is that the DA is just hell-bent on removing me without following due process, even in terms of their own constitution. So I would like to see that the councillors are protected when they exercise their vote to vote for the motion or against the motion.”
