De Lille consults legal team over irregular expenditure report

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille says she’s talking to her legal team on how to deal with an incorrect report implicating her in allegations of irregular expenditure and mismanagement.

The city council on Friday adopted a report prepared by law firm Bowman Gilfillan. The firm was appointed to investigate whether any prima facie grounds existed for disciplinary action to be taken against a few senior managers.

De Lille says the Bowman report cannot stand as it is and must be corrected. She says she asked the law firm to amend it on the third of January but this did not happen.

De Lille says the report is mixing issues. The first one is a political issue whereby there was a subcommittee established by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to investigate tensions in the City of Cape Town. She says she had until yesterday to provide representations to the DA on why she should not resign as mayor which she did.

De Lille says the second part relates to allegations of wasteful expenditure. She says the report on the matter is incorrect and will tarnish her image. Council has agreed to allow further investigations.

De Lille has meanwhile been barred from all DA activities.
