The Democratic Alliance (DA) members in Mpumalanga are marching to highlight the scourge of drug abuse amongst youth in the province.

The prevalence in the use of drugs like dagga, heroine and nyaope has contributed to the significant increase in crime, health and education statistics in the province.

The DA says schools should be places of learning and free from drugs where our children feel safe.

In commemorating Youth Day, the DA will begin the day with a march against drug abuse followed by a public meeting with the residents of Mkhondo at Emazenkeni Stadium.

Mpumalanga Party Youth Leader, Palesa Mobango says, “I think its common knowledge that young people in this country have a serious issue of drug and substance abuse, and there is no effort taken within our province from the police. There is no effort taken within schools in capacitating teachers so that we can deal with the issue of substance abuse at the grassroots level, which is in schools.”

“So what we are here today to try to highlight the fact that drugs are a big issue, we can complain about everything elese but the abuse of drugs and alchohol leads to so many social ills within our community,” Mabango adds.
