DA wants probe on NGO’s involved in Esidimeni tragedy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on Gauteng police to gather more evidence on the NGO’s where 144 mentally ill patients died after being transferred from Life Esidimeni.

The party says the information revealed during the Arbitration hearings, as well as the post-mortem results, pointed to many irregularities at the NGO’s.

The DA’s Jack Bloom says these irregularities need to be investigated, as well as claims of typhoid cases and allegations of rape.

“I think they need to get inconvertible evidence through the postmortem in order to convict strictly those in the NGO’s where the deaths happened. I think the problem is, there is a lot of controversy about how these deaths occurred . And we’re not going to get convictions of those people in charge of the NGO’s when the deaths occurred, unless we get objective evidence from the postmortems to prove that they died because of neglect .”
