The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it wants to change its constitution to include a clause that will allow a recall or removal of its public representatives.

Party leader, Mmusi Maimane was referring to disciplinary action against Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille which is currently underway within the DA.

Speaking at the media briefing in Cape Town, Maimane said by introducing this clause, the party was trying to avoid further bad publicity for not having any mechanisms to remove its public representatives.

The disciplinary action against De Lille is expected to be concluded later this month.

De Lille’s war with the DA has sparked a lot of criticism from across the country. This as majority of DA members in her caucus voted against her during a motion of no confidence debate. She survived by one vote with the support of the African National Congress (ANC).

Now, Maimane says this clause will assist to avoid a similar situation in the future.

Meanwhile, De Lille says the process to appoint a new City Manager will be open and transparent. She says a shortlist for the position will be made public soon.

The position became vacant following the resignation of former City Manager Achmat Ebrahim two months ago amid allegations of misconduct.

City’s Director of Safety and Security and Social Services, Richard Bosman has hinted that he is one of those shortlisted for the position.

“The shortlist will be made available to the public. We’ve gone as far as to invite the opposition parties to observe. The whole process will be open and transparent. All the candidates on the short list will be interviewed and they will have an opportunity to sell themselves,” says Bosman.
