DA wants a Special Inspector-General to prevent COVID-19 relief funds fraud

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has requested the Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni to establish an office for a Special Inspector-General tasked with preventing corruption in the distribution of COVID-19 relief funds.

The party says the Inspector-General should have a broad mandate, including powers to investigate allegations of corruption in all spheres of government for monies allocated to COVID-19 relief.

In a virtual media briefing, DA Spokesperson on Finance, Geordin Hill-Lewis revealed that there is already mismanagement of public money with huge procurement funding being unaccounted for.

“I think one of the key points is that a lot of these expenditures is already happening. We have already seen, with schools going back next week, there is already enormous procurement of PPEs and sanitisers to schools around the country. So, there has been no tender processes or procurement processes for that procurement.”

Meanwhile, the party says it still opposed to the tobacco ban – continuing under level 3 of the lockdown. Interim leader, John Steenhuisen also says testing for COVID-19 needs to improve.
