The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it’s going to table a motion of no confidence against Gauteng Premier David Makhura over the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

On Wednesday, party leader Mmusi Maimane marked Human Rights Day by unveiling a plaque in remembrance of the 144 Esidimeni victims at the Talisman Foundation in Johannesburg.

The foundation, which cares for mentally-ill patients, is not linked to the Esidimeni tragedy, and has been described as exemplary in caring for psychiatric patients.

DA leader in Gauteng John Moodey says it’s not enough for Makhura to say he takes responsibility for the tragedy, and still remain in office.

“A leader, like the captain of the ship, when something goes wrong, and when so many lives have been lost, should step down. Because he’s not worthy of being the premier of Gauteng, to lead this province. Therefore, the Democratic Alliance, through myself and Jack, have formulate of motion of no confidence against David Makhura.”

“I have not confidence in his entire cabinet. And we will be debating this motion of no confidence, as soon as it is put on the list, either in April or May this year.”
