DA piles more pressure on Emfuleni mayor to resign

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has intensified its call for Emfuleni Mayor Simon Mofokeng to resign following allegations that he sexually groomed a 14-year-old girl.

DA members in Gauteng marched to Emfuleni municipal offices in the Vaal to call for the sacking of Mofokeng.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has placed Mofokeng on special leave after the allegations surfaced. He’s been asked by the party to give a detailed report into the allegations.

Police say an inquiry into the matter is underway.

DA Vaal Regional Chairperson Bongani Baloyi says, “Today is the start of the campaign to ensure that Simon Mofokeng is recalled as the mayor of Emfuleni; that he’s recalled as chair or a member of Vaal University of Technology board; that he’s recalled as the ANC chairman of this region; that he must get his unique number and his orange overalls as well. We are saying those things we are going to campaign hard for. We will come here every week if needs to be until he’s gone.”
