Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says the current situation in the North West has given his party confidence that it will win next year’s general elections. He was speaking at the launch of the DA’s provincial election campaign on the North West University’s Potchefstroom campus.

Maimane says their focus is on the creation of job opportunities.

“It shows that the ANC here cannot put the people first. Instead they are picking one faction over another, and services have failed here. That’s why we stand here as the DA, to say we are the party that can bring about change, who will ensure that people bring a capable government here, that will deliver for all the people. We don’t want to hire friends and do all of those things. We want to ensure that the best people work for government, and that government delivers for all the people. That’s why the North West becomes a very important province.”

The province recently experienced violent protests as residents demanded the removal of North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo, who they accuse of corruption. Maimane has urged the Hawks to provide Parliament with a full report on the alleged death threats against the North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

“This cannot be reduced to a factional issue; we want the South African Police Services never to be used by the faction of the ANC, but in fact to do the work of the people of South Africa. So let’s protect the institution. The Hawks, historically, were used by other factions under Jacob Zuma… now we do not want the reversal of that process, let them table a report and we will take action from there,” says Maimane.

More than a week ago, there were allegations that Mahumapelo had received information about a plot to assassinate him and that a group of people had been given a R250 000 pre-payment.
