DA lambastes Mkhwebane’s state of capture scope request

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has sought to clarify her request for the scope on the inquiry into state capture to be widened.

The Democratic Alliance says Mkhwebane’s proposal is neither practical nor in the interest of justice as it might result in the Commission sitting for years and being unable to complete its work.

The DA has also written to President Jacob Zuma demanding that he releases the terms of reference for the inquiry on Friday.

Mkhwebane, however, says she is calling for the broadening of the scope to allow for those that are related to state capture and do not appear to be included.

“Additional state of capture complaints relate to Eskom allegations that (Matshela) Koko released legal opinion to the Guptas; allegations of Minister Brown’s failure to exercise the required executive oversight over Eskom; the allegations of Former Minister of Mineral Resources. With Transnet it relates to the kickbacks regarding the procurement of locomotives. Other issues relate to the allegations that Minister Muthambi availed high level confidential information to the Guptas. Those are open matters and are not mentioned in the report but they relate to the very same matters.”
