The Democratic Alliance(DA) caucus in the City of Cape Town is on Wednesday expected to consider a motion of no confidence in the city’s mayor, Patricia de Lille.

The DA’s Federal Executive last week granted the party’s caucus permission for an internal motion of no confidence in De Lille.

This was after the embattled mayor survived a first motion in the City Counsel in February by one vote.

DA caucus deputy leader, JP Smith, says the party’s Federal Executive could invoke a recall clause which allows the party to request the Mayor to resign, failing which her party membership may be terminated.

“This obviously is a last resort, and not a position the party wanted to find itself in. But from the caucus’ perspective, or at least majority of the caucus members, around 75% of them as evidenced in that vote of no confidence, the relationship has simply become untenable.”
