The Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus in the city of Cape Town will on Wednesday vote on whether to fire its embattled mayor, Patricia de Lille or not.

The caucus is expected to consider yet another motion of no confidence in De Lille, emboldened by a new recall clause.

DA caucus deputy leader, JP Smith says they expect the motion to pass.

He says: “The result is communicated to the federal executive and they then decide if they want to invoke the clause in chapter six of the party constitution. The recall clause which will then allow them to request the mayor to resign, failing which they may then terminate the membership of the mayor.”

“This will then effectively cease her status as a councillor and as the mayor,” says Smith.

The recall clause that was adopted at the DA’s recent congress allows the party to fire members from their positions or terminate the membership of an offending member.

De Lille earlier survived a motion of no confidence by a single vote.
