D-day for Zuma

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former President Jacob Zuma is in the High Court in Durban. He’s facing 16 counts of fraud, money laundering and racketeering.

Zuma is in court following the National Prosecuting Authority’s  (NPA) decision to re-instate 16 charges emanating from the multi-million rand arms deal, in which Zuma is alleged to have received a bribe in order to influence the tender process. Schabir Shaik‘s Nkobi Group was allegedly used to solicit a bribe on behalf of Zuma when he was still the Deputy President.

Between October 1995 and July 2005, Shaik’s company allegedly made 783 payments to Zuma totaling R4 million. The state alleges that Zuma used his position in government to help Shaik in his business dealings in exchange for bribes. Shaik was in return allegedly soliciting bribes for the former President.

It remains unclear who will lead the prosecution team, whether it will be NPA’s head in KwaZulu-Natal – Advocate Moipone Noko – or Advocate Billy Downer, the man who led the team responsible for the conviction of Zuma’s former financial advisor Schabir Shaik.
