20 year limit on sexual abuse case back in court

The Constitutional Court, in Johannesburg, is on Tuesday, expected to hear a case involving the 20 year time limit on reporting sexual abuse from the time it was committed.

This follows a June ruling in the Johannesburg High Court in which the prescription regarding sexual assault offences in the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA) was deemed unconstitutional.

The ruling came after eight people alleged to have been sexually violated by the late billionaire Sidney Frankel over two decades ago sought an amendment to the CPA. It must now be confirmed by the Constitutional Court to come into effect.

The former stockbroker died of cancer at his Johannesburg home on April 13, according to reports at the time.
