Court to hear urgent plea on renewable energy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

An urgent application to stop an agreement for a R56-billion investment in renewable energy projects is expected to be heard in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Transform RSA and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) brought the application two weeks ago.

Government was about to sign the agreement with 27 Independent Power Producers, but it was put on hold pending the outcome of  court case.

The investment partners with the IPP’s will include Eskom as a state entity and the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Numsa and Transform RSA argue that a move from coal to renewable energy sources would drive electricity prices upward and cost mineworkers’ jobs
