Reading Time: < 1 minute

The High Court in the Western Cape has dismissed with costs an application that the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association had brought against the city over its refusal to grant an event permit to host the Tweede Nuwejaar Parade this year.

The city refused to grant the association a permit due to non-compliance with by-laws.

The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association were instead granted rights to host this year’s event in January.

Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says they are pleased with the outcome of the case.

“ We feel that this vindicates our position, as we said all along the allegations against the city are baseless. We hope the CTMCA will focus on supporting those troupes that look to them for guidance. We have said its not about a particular person or association or organisation, but rather about honouring an old tradition which for many people in the city is very important.”
