Corruption won’t stop until senior officials, politicians are jailed: Makhura

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says one of the major reasons why government is battling to tackle corruption is because high profile politicians hardly go to jail for wrongdoing.

The Premier was addressing a consultative stakeholder engagement forum hosted by the provincial government together with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in Newtown, Johannesburg.

The forum, under the theme “Working together towards ridding society of corruption, malpractice and maladministration”, seeks to enhance working relations between the province and the investigating unit.

Makhura said, even though he has introduced the Open tender system and the Integrity unit to tackle corruption in Gauteng, the problem still persists.

He said, “Over 200 forensic investigations have been conducted in the Province since 2009. However, the problem is that the recommendations are often not fully implemented.”

Makhura said he is also concerned that disciplinary processes take too long and none or too few senior corrupt officials or politicians are imprisoned.

The Premier has called on the SIU to do its work without fear or favour.
