COPE opposed to impending job cuts at SABC

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Congress of the People (COPE)  says it is opposed to the impending job cuts at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and that the African National Congress (ANC) must take the full responsibility of the financial mess at the public broadcaster.

COPE  national spokesperson Dennis Bloem says the SABC management and the board need to review the decision about job cuts.

“We are opposing these planned retrenchments and we are saying we can’t understand and we will never understand why innocent workers must now pay for the sins of other people. We have warned over the years more than 10 years, we have warned the ANC about the blatant abuse of power and mismanagement by the then Minister Faith Muthambi and Hlaudi Motsoeneng and the ANC has ignored our calls.”

Bloem says the impending job cuts will be detrimental to SABC’s coverage of next year’s general elections.

“These retrenchments will affect the coverage of the coming elections. We know it is not managers; it is not senior people in the SABC who are covering, who are on the ground with the people to cover these elections, to go into rural areas, into farms. These planned retrenchments will affect that coverage of SABC of the elections.”  Click below for more on the story:
