ConCourt dismisses independent candidates’ urgent application

The Constitutional Court has ruled that the case brought by the leader of a non-partisan organisation, Chantal Revell, is not urgent and postponed the matter the August 15.

Revell approached the Court on an urgent basis to allow independent candidates to participate in next week’s national and provincial elections.

Currently the Constitution only allows candidates through a party political system to participate in the national and provincial polls.

Her legal representative, Senior Counsel Alan Nelson, says the Electoral Act that restricts independent candidates is unconstitutional and invalid.

He says the elections should be postponed to remedy the situation.
