Concern over possible Mahumapelo replacements

Reading Time: < 1 minute

North West based political analyst Andre Duvenhage, says the names proposed by the African National Congress in North West to replace former Premier Supra Mahumapelo, are too close to him and will most likely cause further divisions in the troubled province.

Speaker and acting party provincial secretary, Suzan Danjie, current acting premier Wendy Nelson and former MEC for Education Johannes Tselapedi are the proposed names.

Alliance partners and some within the ANC have refused to accept those names. Professor Duvenhage says a more unifying figure is needed to deal with slates and divisions.

“My biggest concern is that this are people that are very closely link to former Premier Supra Mahumapelo. I would also like to see a person who is more neutral who has an independent stance when it comes to the problems of the North West. We must see someone completely from the outside to take over in the period of the transition up until we reach a point where there’s a new government in place, probably after the elections.”
