South Africans from all walks of life, who lined the Comrades Marathon route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg say this is one of the annual events that brings the nation together.

More than 21 000 runners embarked on the ultimate human race in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They had to complete the 89 kilometre run by 5 pm.

While some supporters screamed words of encouragement others shed tears.

“My husband, it’s his first comrades. He is battling a bit with his knee, but we encouraged him in Hilcrest to carry on,” says a proud wife.

” This is the only day that we as South Africans come together. This is what you call comradeship. I wish this day could happen 365 days where we all can do the same thing, help each other, move together. I have run 18 comrades, I have been on this road, I know what the struggle is,” says a supporter.

“It’s awesome, those guys are amazing, honoured that we can watch. These incredible people, just doing their best against personal odds, injuries, they just carry on, no matter what, for as long as they can, its very special,” adds another supporter.
