As thousands of athletes are expected to descend on KwaZulu-Natal for the 2018 Comrades Marathon, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal expects about R700 million to be injected into the economy of the province.

More than 21 000 athletes are expected to participate in the marathon.

The internationally recognised race will begin outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and ends at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Tourism KwaZulu Natal Board chairperson Sthembiso Madlala says the event has a positive impact on tourism and hospitality industries.

“As tourism KZN, we always encouraged them to stay and experience our offerings as the province. What is also important is that it’s estimated that the Comrades marathon will contribute between R500 million and R700 million to the kitty of the province… which is a huge contribution if you also consider the fact that many industries are going to benefit.”

“So, the contribution is immense – hence we always make sure that as Tourism KwaZulu Natal we market this marathon,” says Madlala.
