Eastern Cape Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Fikile Xasa has welcomed the arrest of 12 people in relation to illegal circumcision.

The arrests were made across various parts of the province and include a bogus traditional surgeon, a father and a grandfather of some initiates.

The Department’s Spokesperson, Mamkeli Ngam says the MEC has urged parents to ensure that they continue to be visible at initiation schools during the festive season to ensure there are no deaths or injuries.

“He encourages the members of the SAPS to work hard to ensure that no stone is left unturned. He is sending out the authority of the state to ensure that our boys go to the bush in a safe environment. He also wishes to call upon parents, families, and traditional leaders to work together to ensure the safe passage of our boys throughout the remainder of the season.”
