‘Coalition governments are discouraging’

Political analyst Sethulago Matebesi says what is happening in areas that opposition parties have entered into coalition governments is discouraging.

His statement comes as the Democratic Alliance holds its national elective conference which will start at the Tshwane events centre in Pretoria on Saturday.

The two-day event will see the election of a new party leadership as well as the adoption of policy positions. Matebesi says coalition governments are concerning.

“If you look at coalition governments and what is happening in municipalities. They need to learn how to navigate their way around dealing with other political parties. I don’t mean that the DA is to blame for the current mess that we find in our municipalities with these coalition governments but it seems as if there is a problem there.”

Current leader Mmusi Maimane is expected to be re-elected unopposed. Maimane says they will use the occasion to champion policies that will position the party as an alternative government during the 2019 elections.
