Civil society accuse Motsoaledi of rushing NHI bill for election campaign

Government’s plan for a universal health coverage bill, the National Health Insurance will come before Cabinet this week before going to Parliament.

Several pro-poor civil society organisations including Section 27 and the Treatment Action Campaign, among others, have accused Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi of trying to rush through the Bill in Parliament, as an election tool for the ANC ahead of the 2019 national election.

But Motsoaledi and the labour federation Cosatu have refuted the claim and instead accuse these organisations of wanting to stall the NHI.

Member of TAC Mark Heywood says all people must be able to access best health care system.

He says the corruption in the health system make it difficult for the department to perform their basic function.
