The City of Johannesburg might declare an area in Protea Glen in Soweto, where a storm damaged houses at the weekend, a disaster zone.

Mayor Herman Mashaba has called for an investigation into the quality of construction of buildings in the city after some collapsed.

Mashaba says he met with city officials and stakeholders involved to seek answers on why residents were allowed to move into unsafe houses.

“With the city officials I have requested a meeting demanding all relevant stakeholders including the provincial and national government so that we come out with intervention measures. That meeting lasted for two hours and very serious decisions were taken based on the statement that you have seen. I’m handing that report on Friday by 14h00,” says Mashaba.

“I need a thorough investigation of every house so that I can see who is responsible because the quality of the houses affected was below standard. How did the banks actually offer R400 000 or R500 000 mortgages on a bad quality building like this?” asks Mashaba.
