Citizens fear of possible coup in Zimbabwe

The media blackout has been in force since Monday night after the Defence Forces Commander, Constantino Chiwenga told a news conference that President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party had been infiltrated by counter-revolutionaries who wanted to destroy it and that “drastic action” needed to be taken immediately.

Referring to last week’s sacking of vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, Chiwenga, claimed that ZANU-PF had launched a purging and cleansing process which is mostly targeting military veterans.

His axing has paved the way for the 93-year old president’s wife, Grace to succeed him as president.

Reports said at least four tanks were seen entering Harare heightening fears of a possible coup.

Earlier on Tuesday Zimbabwe Zanu-PF Youth said they are prepared to die in defence of President Robert Mugabe’s government.

This comes a day after the military threatened to intervene if Mugabe does not rein in his warring Zanu-PF lieutenants.
