Chiefs looking to end trophy drought with Nedbank Cup

Reading Time: 2 minutes

South African football is going through a phase where the country’s two biggest teams haven’t lifted some silverware in four to five years and these are the challenges that Kaizer Chiefs have to respond to in the Nedbank Cup. Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp replaced Italian born coach Giovanni Solinas in December 2018 and he knows winning this season’s Nedbank Cup could go a long way to satisfying the millions of Amakhosi fans.

Ahead of Chiefs’ crucial semi-final against Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth this coming Saturday, Middendorp says winning this trophy could make things a bit easier going forward for the club.

Following Orlando Pirates’ 2-1 win over Free State Stars this past weekend, Chiefs is officially out of contention for the league title. In the last two matches, Chiefs have lost at home to Baroka FC and drawn away with Black Leopards FC. Chiefs defender Kgotso Moleko says winning this trophy could boost their confidence for next season.
