Chiefs, Cape Town to battle it out in pre-season friendly

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The inaugural Mpumalanga Cultural Experience Cup pre-season friendly between Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City will take place at the Mbombela stadium this weekend.

The match is in preparation for the new season starting on the fourth of next month and the teams will be able to gauge how far they’ve come since resuming training following the off-season.

It’s the first ever Mpumalanga Cultural Experience Cup featuring Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City as well as the Spear of the Nation, that will take on Mbombela United in a curtain raiser.

The Soweto giants have already been involved in two pre-season tournaments – the Maize Cup beating Free State Stars on penalties and Shell Helix Ultra Cup where they were beaten 2-1 by Mamelodi Sundowns . Cape Town City on the other hand, have been playing pre-season friendlies behind closed doors.

Their most recent friendly was against Orlando Pirates at the Cape Town Stadium this past weekend. The Mpumalanga MEC for Sport, Thandi Shongwe, says this tournament gives the people of Mpumalanga the opportunity to go and watch their favourite players.

Cape Town City suffered two defeats against Chiefs in the Absa Premiership last season and City coach, Benny McCarthy will be hoping for the early bragging rights.

Meanwhile, Chiefs’ football manager, Bobby Motaung says they all hope the Premier Soccer League’s Tendai Ndoro saga is resolved soon so that the Absa Premiership can start as scheduled on the fourth of August.

Motaung says all teams will be affected and more so the teams that will compete in the CAF competition if the saga is drawn out any further.

The Johannesburg High Court will on Tuesday hear Ajax Cape Town’s application to interdict the start of the Absa premiership season.
