Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba says that poor households will not be affected by the increase of VAT to 15 %.

Gigaba said that there are 19 basic food items that are zero-rated.

As of 1 April 2018, government proposes to amend the VAT Act (1991) to reflect the original policy intent.
