Sardia Shukhraj
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The third suspect in the botched car hijack that left nine-year old Sardia Shukhraj of Chatsworth dead, appeared briefly in the Durban magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

Sibonelo Mkhize’s case has been postponed to Thursday for further investigations. He faces charges of murder, theft and  kidnapping.

The girl was killed during a shoot out between her father and robbers as they sped off with her in the back of the vehicle.

Mkhize entered the courtroom limping as he was still bleeding from injuries he sustained, allegedly during the police investigation. His clothes were covered in blood stains.

In court, Mkhize made numerous demands, including that he be moved from the Durban Central police cells to Westville prison.

Hundreds of community members did not make it to the Durban Magistrate’s Court as the matter was moved from Chatsworth at the last minute.

The case was postponed to Thursday for a bail application.

The prosecution team have asked the court to remand the accused on the basis that his address needed to be verified and check if he has any pending criminal cases.

One suspect was killed when the community took the law into their own hands, and another suspect is still at large.
