Police Minister Bheki Cele hopes to make an arrest soon in connection with the murder of Musawenkosi Maqatha Mchunu, the ANC branch regional convenor in the Moses Mabhida region.

Mchunu was gunned down outside his home in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, on Friday evening.

Cele paid a visit to the family on Sunday.

There’s no end in sight to the killing of political leaders in KwaZulu-Natal. In the last three weeks at least four political leaders were killed.

The motives however have not been established in any of these murders.

Sunday police Minister Cele assured the Mchunu family that police are working around the clock to apprehend those responsible.

Mchunu was shot at by gunmen who lay in wait on his return home.

He was among the leaders who were calling for the postponement of the party’s provincial elective conference.

Cele says police are working tirelessly to end the killings in the province.

He said there’s been a breakthrough in killing of ANC leader Sifiso Cele who was gunned down on the south coast last weekend.

Meanwhile, Cele says he is liaising directly with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) over the killing of the party’s PR councillor in the Zululand district, Sibuyisele Dlamini.

Dlamini was killed in an ambush on the R66 between uLundi and Nongoma on Friday.

Cele says the security cluster will be visiting the provincial task team to examine the progress of its work in dealing with politically-motivated killings.

Meanwhile, the National Working Committee of the ANC is expected to visit the province on Monday.
