Fees Must Fall activist Kanya Cekeshe is out of prison.
He was released in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Cekeshe is among prisoners who were granted a 12-month remission of sentence by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
He had been serving five years at the Leeuwkop prison for burning a police vehicle in Braamfontein during the fees must fall protests at Wits University.
Cekeshe would have qualified for parole in around February 2020.
He is the second high profile prisoner to go home for Christmas this week.
On Sunday night, AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo was released from prison.
The king was jailed in December 2015 after the High Court in the Eastern Cape sentenced him to 15 years in jail for kidnapping, assault, arson and defeating the ends of justice.

‘Happy to be home’
The family of Fees Must fall activist says he is happy to be home. His uncle, Mnikelo Madala says the road to clearing his name is long.
“He is happy to be home. He understands that the struggle is not just over yet for him. Ultimately we’re trying to get him cleared officially and get the record expunged. But he understands that it’s going to be a process.”
