Case of man charged with raping stepdaughter postponed

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The case against a 43-year-old man – charged with allegedly repeatedly raping his 10-year old stepdaughter – has been postponed to the 10th of October for further investigation.

He appeared briefly in the Verulam Magistrates Court, north of Durban, via a video link from the Westville Prison.

The identity of the suspect is known to SABC News, however he cannot be named in order to protect the child.

Appearing via a video link, the man was neatly dressed and seemed calm and collected.

He is facing several charges including rape, sexual grooming of children, sexual assault, display of child pornography and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The suspect was arrested by police after Verulam residents allegedly assaulted him earlier this year, claiming that he had been raping the young girl since her mother’s death five years ago.

During previous court appearances, the suspect was seen limping as a result of the injuries he initially sustained. The man and his stepdaughter stayed in a room — where authorities found items including sex toys, lingerie and pornographic material.

While this case has, in the past, garnered a great deal of media attention and community interest, this was not reflected in or outside the court today.

The matter has been postponed to the 10th of October for further investigation, as cell phone records of the accused are still outstanding. His next court appearance will also be via video link.
