The City of Cape Town’s Safety Directorate has set aside R45 million for the appointment of additional staff to its Metro Police and Traffic Service.

The Directorate was allocated just over R110 million  following the approval of the City’s budget for the new financial year.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety, JP Smith says they are also investing R27 million for the on-going construction of fire stations in Masiphumelele and Sir Lowry’s Pass while R20 million will be used for new vehicles.

He says an additional R5 million will be given to replace CCTV cameras, “We’ve groomed hundreds of potential candidates over the past few years as volunteers and reservists and this allows us to fill our vacancies far more rapidly.”

“This is part of on-going efforts to expand the city’s policing and emergency resources to compensate for the under-resourcing of the SAPS in Cape Town, where the deployment is below the national average. The need for visible policing was further highlighted by the public during the budget comment period,” says Smith.
