Cape Town Marathon calls for public support

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Organisers of the Cape Town Marathon which takes place on September 15 have called on members of the public and athletes to support the race.

It is currently the only IAAF Gold Label status marathon in Africa. The new IAAF Platinum label will be granted for 2020 races and it comes with a full set of new requirements and regulations.

Race Chairman Francois Pienaar and race ambassador Elana Meyer are appealing to South Africans and Africans to support and run the race.

Fifteen thousand athletes will have to finish the race and organisers will have to extend its international reach to 12.5% from the 82 countries represented last year.

“World athletics have raised the bar, we were delighted when we got IAAF gold status – we’ve had that for 3 years the only one on the African continent. There are a lot of things we need to get right in terms of road closures, elite runners, they’ve now taken the bar up in terms of competitiveness and also the number of runners that need to finish a marathon to enable you to have that status,” says Pienaar.
