Cape Town police say a 31-year-old man from Grassy Park on the Cape Flats has been sentenced to 23 years imprisonment for murdering his own father.

Police spokesperson F.C. Van Wyk says Jonathan Schapira was charged after it was established that his father did not die of natural causes.

An autopsy later revealed that the cause of death was strangulation, after the investigating officer learned that Schapira planned to kill his father because he was going to leave him out of his will.

The thorough investigation of crime and bringing of perpetrators before court is crucial in the effort of the SAPS to ensure conviction.

This was shown again when Schapira was sentenced after he had strangled his 71-year-old father at the time to death on the 7 November 2016.

Van Wyk says a second suspect in the murder was arrested last week and is being held in Pollsmoor Prison.
