The Netherlands Consulate General in Cape Town has launched its Bicycle Mayor initiative, a global programme that aims to accelerate the progress of cycling in cities.
The consulate’s Nichola Walker-Woodard says the Bicycle Mayor will play a major role in trying to boost the concept of cycling in communities, with a key focus on underprivileged areas.
“In terms of looking at cycling as a sustainable mobility option – something that’s affordable; something that’s acceptable. So, we’re working with the pedal power association in putting together a programme where we find the perfect candidate to represent these communities and see how they perceive bicycles and see how we can work together, see that it becomes an option for those that it hadn’t been before.”
