Several roads will be closed in the Cape Town CBD on Friday for the annual minstrel parade. Thousands of spectators will be lining the streets in the Mother City to catch a glimpse of their favourite troops dressed in colourful gear.

The procession takes place between Kaizergracht in District Six, the Bo-Kaap and the Grand Parade. Commonly known as the Cape Minstrel Carnival or “Tweede Nuwe Jaar”, the event has been held for more than a century.

The city’s traffic spokesperson, Richard Coleman, says road closures will take place around Keizersgracht, Darling and Wale Streets.

“Keizersgracht Street is where the buses are gonna stop and off load and then Darling Street will be closed. Adderly Street, Wale Street, this is the route that they gonna march and we will also have sections of Buitengracht Street and Rose Street that will also be closed, so all the joining roads, Long Street, Loop Street, Berg Street which is coming into Wale Street will also be closed.”
